Government Medical College, Kozhikode is the foremost medical college, which is situated about 10 km east from the heart of Kozhikode. CMC is an abbreviation of Calicut Medical College. This institution started their journey from the year 1957. Dr. B. Ramakrishna Rao is the founder of the CMC. It was begun as the second medical college in Kerala. Besides, this is considered as the first center of medical education, imparting comprehensive knowledge & skills, progressive & research based medical education etc.

Government Medical College, Kozhikode

This college is affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences and University of Calicut. Sri. E. M. S was the Chief Minister of Kerala state, who opened the college on On 15th March, 1959. CMC started postgraduate medical education in various branches in 1970s. Today the college offers PG courses in 28 disciplines. Masters Degree Courses (10), Bachelors Degree Courses (7), Doctoral / Fellowship Courses (1), Courses After 10th (2), Diploma Courses (19) are the available courses. Dr.K. Devayani Md Da, Dr.S.Remadevi, Dr.Hema.C.G., Dr.Joseraj.M.G, Prof. K Rajashekharan Nair, Dr. Vijayalakshmy.R, Dr. M. N. Krishnan, Dr. Sivakumar.S and Dr. K.P Aravindan are the prominent faculty members.

This college provides infrastructure amenities like hospital, medical library, labs, airy classrooms etc. Internet, Canteen, Bank, Post-Office,  Sports and NSS are the other facilities. CMC offers separate hostel for boys and girls. It has well equipped classrooms with modern facilities like air conditioner, Overhead Projects and audio systems. The college has huge collection of books. It has an air conditioned library. College impart separate reading room for the learners. Prof. Sasidharan P.K, Dr.Vinod Scaria, Sasidharan Puthenpurakkal, Azad Moopen etc are notable alumni.

CMC publishes the Journal of Orthopaedics and the Calicut Medical Journal. It started The Asian Student Medical Journal in 2003. The aim of CMC is to develop proficient, dynamic and caring physicians. In 1957 the undergraduate students strength was 50. Now it exceeds the limit.
