SanDisk – Israeli American Manufacturer of Flash Memory Products

SanDisk is an Israeli-American manufacturer of flash memory products, including memory cards and readers, USB flash drives, and solid state drives. It was founded in 1988 by Eli Harari, Sanjay Mehrotra and Jack Yuan. It was originally known as SunDisk. As of February 2015, it is the third-largest manufacturer of flash memory. On May 12, 2016, SanDisk was acquired by hard drive manufacturer Western Digital in a US$19 billion deal.

In 2004, SanDisk microSD card became the fastest growing form factor in the world. Five million cards are shipped in its first year. In 2005 Sandisk acquired Matrix Semiconductor and in 2006 acquired USB flash drive maker, M-Systems.

They are the manufactures of most selling popular flash cards like SD, miniSD, Compact flash, MMC, MicroSD and USB flash drives. In 2009, SanDisk ships the world’s first Flash memory cards with 64 GB X 4 (4-bits-per-cell) NAND Flash technology. In 2014 they announced a 15nm technology, the world’s most advanced NAND flash process node.

SanDisk co-founder Eli Harari developed the Floating Gate EEPROM which proved the practicality, reliability and endurance of semiconductor-based data storage.[5] On May 10, 2000 the Toshiba Corporation of Japan and the SanDisk Corporation said that they would jointly form a new semiconductor company to produce advanced flash memory, primarily for digital cameras.

In 2012, the Enough Project ranked SanDisk the third highest of 24 consumer electronics companies on “progress on conflict minerals”. In 2014, SanDisk co-founder Harari won the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Barack Obama for his innovations and contributions to flash memory storage solutions.

SanDisk acquired SMART Storage Systems to enhance its focus on the enterprise storage market in 2013. In 2015 created a new storage category with an all-flash system, InfiniFlash. It entered into the portable SSD market with a family of high-performance drives.
