    Some facts about ac fans:
Bigger fans have more poles so they are slower but the motor has more torque. Slower fans are usually more efficient.
For examples, 56 inch fans generally have 18 poles motor, so for 50 Hz line frequency, synchronous speed Ns= 120*f/P = 120*50/18 = 333 and actual speed N= Ns(1-s). That is around 270-290 rpm depending on s (slip)
    For 48″ fans poles P= 14, Ns= 120*50/14 = 428. Their speed are around 350-400 rpm.
A 24″ fan has only 6 poles, so Ns= 1000 and actual speed 800-900 rpm.
A faster fan gives more air but also consume more power thus inefficient. A slower fan uses less power for the same amount of air delivered. Total airflow is measured in CMM (or cfm) depends not only on speed but also shape, blade pitch and aerodynamics. High speed also causes noise and more wear and tear of the fan motor. That is one reason older fans (slow) lasted much longer than modern fans (fast).
A properly sized and good branded ceiling fan will do the job best.

Crompton greaves air circulator, EPC, Polar, Almonard, Havells models all have ball bearings and copper coils. But remember these are heavy, so needs expert professionals to fix them on walls. Air circulators are available from 18 inch and onwards.

I went to buy fan. CG 1200mm was at Rs.1200/- & Havells 1200mm was at Rs.1800/- why is the price difference so much? Anyone can help understanding this technically?

    1. Samir
      November 8, 2015 at 8:20 pm

You are consider that 50% price you are paying for brand name. In most cases fan motors are imported from China at low price, here only accessories and blades are attached. That’s all. Most fans, except very few are completely India made. So you can expect that most fans are same inside. Huge price difference as you have pointed out may be because of one is a high speed model and another is regular speed variation.

    2. tiki
      May 26, 2016 at 4:44 pm

It’s not about the brand. Both companies produce fans in different price levels. Higher price models are generally made of better quality materials and better components (ball bearing, magnet wire etc.). Besides, decorative fans are usually cost a bit more.

  29. Bishanka Sen
    May 31, 2015 at 1:05 pm

Cinni Regular ceiling fans (only 56 inch) are by far technically superior with 18 pole motor and it stands apart from all other brands in india. All other fans are technically same but cosmetically different. Khaitan, Polar and Orient are also good for ceiling fans. Havells have nagging ball bearing problems, CG have less coil in them. And Old Usha fans are good—– the legendary heavy duty USHA DELUX

    1. Tiku
      May 26, 2016 at 5:03 pm

Usha Prima and Crompton Greaves High breeze used to be the best choice during 70s-90s. Both fans were great and many of them is still working fine. Khaitan had some great models and some crappy models (my experience with Khaitan was worst). Polar and orient were pretty good.
Today no fan comes with quality. Every fan motor is light duty and start showing problems after 8-10 years of use.
