Top 5 Famous Archaeological sites in India

The word Archaeology determines Stone age, Bronze civilization and earlier medieval periods. India is a country with ethnic diversity and landscape that houses lots of archaeological sites. This is the birthplace for many of the religions such as Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism apart from Hinduism.

There are so many historical places in India which attracts you the most. Taj mahal, Agra is the world famous wonder historical monument. So have a tour to these historical palaces, forts and historical monuments. Below I enlist some of the famous archaeological sites in India:

1. Taj Mahal


Taj Mahal is situated on the banks of sizzling Yamuna river in Agra. Taj mahal was built by famous legend Shah Jahan in the memory of his beautiful wife Mumtaz Begum. Taj Mahal is considered as the monument of love. Famous architectures from Persia & Indo islamic religions designed this beautiful monument.

Ustaad Isa & Mohammed Afandi are considered as the key members in designing this mausoleum. This beautiful mausoleum is surrounded with gardens  and is described by the poets as ‘Heaven on Earth’. The supreme white marble in the night illumines in the moonlight. Taj Mahotsav is the best time to visit Taj Mahal.

During this festival various articles are sold made by the artists of Saharanpur like handmade carpets, wood carvings, pottery items from Khuja and silk from Benaras. Taj festival includes dance performances performed by dancers from all over the country. No matter Taj Mahal can be visited any time in a year, the beautiful architecture will never leave the travellers to amaze.

2. Khajuraho temples


Khajuraho tmple is situated in Madhya Pradesh and is famous for it’s architecture. Khajuraho got it’s name from Khajur tree( date tree) which is founded plenty in this area. There are 85 other temples in Khajuraho. Each temple has it’s own significance.

These temples varies from other temples in India in terms of worshiping, deity an religions in India. Khajuraho is famous for architecture and sculptures. There are hundreds of images in this temples signifying art of Hindu religion.  Khajuraho has become a famous tourist destination next to Taj Mahal.

3. Sun temple, Konark


Sun temple is a famous place of Sun God built by King Narsimhadeva. Sun temple is one of the architecture wonder of the world and is a part of UNESCO world heritage. Sun temple is meant for Surya, the sun God. Sun temple is covered with sculptures of erotic couples, deities & animals & maidens.

Sun temple’s main attraction is Wheels of Chariot. The roof of Sun temple is made form sandstone. Sun temple is equipped with the famous figures of Hanuman & other divine & semi divine figures adorned with floral malas(garlands). Sun temple is also termed as Black pagoda as it is made from black granite.

4. Ajanta & Ellora caves


Ajanta & Ellora caves are located in Aurangabad district in Maharashtra. This cave is regarded as world heritage site carved from rocks and is dedicated to Lord Buddha. Several animal & human figures are carved from this rocks. These caves are built in Gupta period.

Beautiful murals are  showing the scenes of Buddha’s life. Ellora is considered as the 8th century Kailashnath temple  showing the scenes from Ramayana & Mahabharata. Ajanta and Ellora caves depicts their own beauty which is mismatched.

5. Sanchi Stupa


Sanchi is the center for  famous Buddhist stupa in the world as per world heritage site. Ashoka built this Stupa, Ashoka has built so many Stupas. The carvings in this stupas depicts Buddhas life. This is the largest stupa in India.

Besides Buddha’s carvings there are other beautifully carved animals figures. The ancient name of Sanchi is Vidishagiri and people of Vidhisha  follow Buddhism. Vist Sanchi and experience the realism of Buddhism situated in the midst of natural beauty.

    Hi Deepa,
    There are 265 monuments /sites under the jurisdiction of Archaeological Survey of India, Agra Circle – including three World Heritage Monuments:- Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

    yes.. these are the Famous Archaeological places across India. But there are several other places too.
